Reflecting on an Incredible Year at Beckview Studios: Our 2024 Highlights

As 2024 draws to a close, Beckview Studios has plenty of reasons to celebrate. It’s been a remarkable year filled with inspiring music, innovative projects, and a growing sense of community that reaches far beyond our Scarborough base. We want to share just a selection of highlights—far from exhaustive—to give you a glimpse of what’s been happening in our world.

A Year of Inspiring Music & Artist Achievements

This year, our studio played a part in a wide range of releases. Deep Sea Daggers treated us to two compelling singles—“Everything I Had” and “Blacked Out”—while Oneshyreptile’s album “The Field” (co-produced by Chris Jones) took listeners on a journey through genre-bending soundscapes. Sunbeam’s “Give Me Something” climbed to No. 2 on the iTunes chart, Sam Barrington’s “All The Years” found a heartfelt audience, and Dan Halsey’s “I Wanna Meet Paul McCartney” delighted music lovers with its quirky charm.

We were delighted to welcome back jazz luminary William Cline Bailey for his soulful fifth release with us, “Discovery.” Emilly Gaskell contributed two distinctive singles—“Folk Song” and “More Than I”—adding an intimate, earthy tone to this year’s lineup. The Blow-Ins delivered “All Along the Sand,” capturing the essence of our coastal surroundings.

The Modern Horrors’ single “You” featured drumming by Fredi Lenton-Dixon (from the band Pleasure Centre, and one of our regular session players that we sourced specifically for the project), adding a dynamic layer to their sound. We were also thrilled to work with the band Thank, who has since been signed to the renowned Big Scary Monsters record label. The sound quality achieved in our live room, paired with our vintage mixing desk and tape machine, clarifying their sound.

From folk and jazz to rock and indie, these projects represent just a selection of what has passed through our doors—2024 has ushered in far more music, talent, and creative energy than we can capture here. We feel truly grateful to every artist who entrusted their sound to Beckview Studios this year. Listen to the artists above, and discover more on our ‘Recorded at Beckview Studios’ Spotify playlist!

Beyond Music Releases

We embraced storytelling and audio-focused projects, including “What the Sea Saw,” an 8-part audio trail produced by Digital Drama and recorded at Beckview Studios. We also worked on podcasts and recorded an audiobook for Penguin Books, demonstrating the versatility of our studio and engineering team.

Education, Training & Community Involvement

This summer, our inaugural three-day Recording Production Summer School welcomed aspiring producers and musicians eager to learn the craft of recording, mixing, and mastering. We worked with Coventry University Scarborough students to create professional voice reels that support their acting ambitions, while visits from Scarborough TEC gave future audio professionals a hands-on look at life in a working studio.

Live Performances & Events

We opened our space to multiple Live Lounge sessions, featuring an eclectic range of acts such as The Feens, Beetlebug, Beth Pilling, Gemma Gates, Phil Hooley, Fight the Giant, Sunbeam, Emily Gaskell, and others from across Scarborough, Leeds, Hull, Northallerton, and beyond. These intimate, stripped-back shows celebrated a diverse musical landscape. Many of these performances can be enjoyed again on our YouTube channel.

Our first “Live and Loud” event with Scarborough Extreme Festival dialed up the intensity, showcasing bands like Deep Sea Daggers, Shindig Band, Ten Foot Tom and the Leprosy Crooks, and Bad Luck Brian and offering an exciting contrast to the more relaxed Live Lounge sessions.

Throughout the year we also hosted tribute acts, including Fire and Rain (a celebration of James Taylor’s music) and Alastair James’ Paul Simon tribute both events perfomed by world-class musicians.

We were ecstatic to have received the Best Music Award at the Scarborough Fringe Festival this year, and enjoyed multiple features on BBC York. We supported photoshoots for “Hannah - The Soldier Diaries,” produced music videos, hosted worship evenings, presented at the A Step FWD Awards ceremony, and ventured into video podcasts and audiobook projects. Every endeavor has helped broaden our horizons and deepen our connections across the creative community.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we set our sights on the new year, we have some exciting events and opportunities on the horizon:

Producer and creative Stew Baxter will bring emerging talent from Hull to co-host a Live Lounge event. The Froots are confirmed headliners, promising a night of music discovery and collaboration.

A Live Lounge session featuring Pyramid Park, an indie pop artist from Cambridge, ahead of his third album “Cyclones & Silence” set for February 2025. Expect an intimate, memorable performance that gives you a front-row seat to new music before it launches.

BBC-trained engineer Iain Betson (Reel Resilience) and our chief engineer Chris Jones will host two identical one-day masterclass sessions on recording to analogue tape. Participants choose either March 14 or March 15 and will learn about tape recording processes, selecting tape types, best practices, and how to harness this format creatively. With limited spaces, these sessions could be the perfect gift for the aspiring audio enthusiast in your life.

We’re thrilled to host US singer-songwriter Kate McDonnell—back in the UK after over 20 years—known for her unique playing style and award-winning songwriting. Leeds-based 6-piece funk band Flat Moon will also join the session, guaranteeing a night of exceptional artistry in our live room environment.

June 2025

Keep your eyes peeled for another Summer Live Lounge in association with Scarborough Fringe Festival and Scalby Fair—dates TBC.

Voice reel clinic dates will also be announced soon, providing further opportunities for performers to refine their acting-focused voice reels.
